Brake Repair & Replacement

Most people don't spend a lot of time thinking about the brakes when they buy a new car. The truth is, though, that the brakes might be the most important part of any vehicle. They allow you to stop safely and effectively, and it's dangerous to drive a car without functioning brakes. To make sure you're keeping yourself, your passengers, and other Tucson residents safe, learn a little bit more about brake repair and brake replacement.

How Do I Know When It's Time for Brake Replacement?

We often tell people to get their brakes checked twice a year, or maybe more often for people who drive a lot. If you haven't been good about keeping up with your regular brake maintenance, it's especially important to know about all of the warning signs of brake problems.

There are several signs that it's time to get your brake system inspected. Be mindful of any of the following, then bring your vehicle in for brake repair or brake replacement as soon as you notice that something unusual is going on with your vehicle's brakes.

  • If your brake pedal feels soft or spongy when you press on it, something isn't quite right. You shouldn't even notice that there's any less resistance than there was before. Signs like these normally point to issues like worn brake pads, low brake fluid, or air bubbles in the brake lines.
  • If your vehicle shudders or pulls to one side whenever you press on the brakes.
  • Your car makes unusual noises when you're braking; that's another sure sign that something is off. Examples of these noises might include screeching, grinding, thumping, or squealing. A squealing noise normally tells you that your brake pads are getting low, and they're designed to make that noise in this situation. If you ignore the noise, though, it may eventually turn into grinding or howling. At that point, you have metal on metal contact that could damage your brake rotors and brake drums. Brake repairs that involve the rotors and drums are a lot more expensive than simple brake pad replacements. Replace your brake pads before it gets to that point.
  • Your brake pedal vibrates while you're pushing on it.
  • Your car is leaving brake fluid in your garage or your usual parking spot. Leaking fluid could be any number of things, all of which make it worth bringing your vehicle in for an inspection. In the case of leaking brake fluid, the puddle is likely to be yellow in color.
  • Your car doesn't stop as sharply as it used to, and it takes a longer distance for your vehicle to reach a complete standstill. This is a clear sign that your brakes aren't working as well as they used to, so you should take immediate action to make sure your vehicle can stop safely again. It's a bad sign if you have to push the brake pedal all the way to the floor just to come to a routine stop.
